Why is this little girl so sad?

I bought this at 7-11 in Beijing because the packaging tickled me. I really want to know what product could possibly be using a crying, abused child as their advertisement. Because I'm in China now, buying this item did not represent a large financial risk (I think they may have paid me to take it).

The contents felt dry and crunchy through the package, so I thought it might be rice cakes. That would make sense, because rice cakes are a snack that a child might reasonably be distraught to be given.

But then I opened it, and it was instant ramen! Who in their right mind would be miserable if they were full of ramen? She obviously doesn't know how good she's got it.

  1. Oh the infamous 7-11! How many stories begin (or end there?)
I think the noodles will make her stop crying...

  2. Find out what it says! And report back.

  3. The only thing I can read on there is the character for "little", as in "Little Mary Sue" or "Little Red Riding Hood". Maybe she's sad that you're eating her ramen.

  4. That packaging looks like to me like a feminist commentary on the misogny of the culture. Aren't the tears of the oppressed so terribly sweet?
